I recently purchased a new home, the home was fitted with a very old salt based water softener (used tons of water). The water as provided by the local water company had a bit of a favor that my family did appreciate. So in the goal of replacing the salt based softer I choose to install a very expensive $4,000 plus) water treatment system from Pelican. The water softener was a salt free system. Please let be be very clear, the Pelican system did a very nice job of improving the quality and favor of the water - very much like bottled water quality. The only issue was that due to the excessively hard southern Ohio lime store filter water the dishes coming out of the dishwasher looked dirtier than when they were put into it. Boiling water in a pot for pasta required tons of effort with cleaners and a scrubbing pad to remove the "bath tub" ring form the pot. In very short order (two days) we noticed that the "bath tub ring" was no long an issue and the dishes were cleaner coming out of the dishwasher. The only solution that Pelican suggested was to purchase their salt based water softener, which I did feel was an option. I will categorically state that I do not understand how the Scale Watcher works, I was totally skeptical that it could possibly work (has to be "snake oil"). The great thing about SW is that there is a one year 100% satisfaction guaranty. You cannot lose. My advice is if you have hard water this is a very nice and easy solution. Mark Schnitzer was a great help in selecting the correct unit for my application.

Snake Oil or Solution?

Reading reviews with regards to electronic water conditioners, leave a person wondering if they really work or just snake oil. My salt water softener died and I let it off-line for some time. Lime was building up on my faucets, shower heads, etc., that scrubbing would not help. So I started researching various products since I was tired of purchasing salt. Discussing my issues with several water softener retail outlets, they all told me these conditioners were nothing but snake oil and lies, the ONLY solution was to replace my dead water softener. Thinking that the companies selling water softeners for $1600 and making several hundred dollars for each installation, why would they want to sell a $400 product and make a lot less money.

Some of the electronic conditioner companies have been in business for several decades, so I thought I'd try one.

I decided to purchase the ScaleWatcher 3 Star due to the fact the company offered a 1 year satisfaction warranty. I could return the unit if I felt it did not work, so what did I have to loose?

I installed the unit in about 20 minutes, three weeks ago. With-in 10 days the lime scales on the shower head started peeling off. After about 2 weeks, the scales were about 90% gone. I use a portable humidifier which was crusted with lime deposits. Again, after about 3 weeks, the lime was turning into goop and wiped clean with a damp rag.
